メルボルンこども文庫は2000年からコロナロックダウン2022年までの２０年間ほとんど休みなく毎月第一日曜日に開催していました。近くの森や海辺、またはみんなでキャンプに行ったり、とても有意義な日本とメルボルンをつなぐ子供達の輪を深く育てていくことができました。通算１００家族以上の家族とのつながり、私たちもかえがたい友人をたくさん得ることができたし、文庫を通じて今でも親同士、成人した子供達同士が親友としてつきあっている人たちもいます。楽しい仲間と、日本語での物語を通じての深い繋がりをもてたことに心より感謝しております。その活動内容についての記録を以下にのこしておきます。

The Melbourne Children's Library operated almost without interruption from 2000 until the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2022, hosting gatherings on the first Sunday of every month. These gatherings included activities like exploring nearby forests and beaches or even going on group camping trips. Over the years, we cultivated a meaningful community that deepened the bonds between children and families, connecting Japan and Melbourne.
In total, we engaged with over 100 families, forming invaluable friendships. Through the library, many parents remain close friends, and even the now-grown children continue their friendships today. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to create these profound connections through Japanese stories and shared activities with such wonderful companions. メルボルンこども文庫は、2001年7月に始まりました。質の高い日本語の子どもの本をお互い貸し借りするために、有志が4家族ほど集まったのが始まりです。やがて会員も蔵書も増え、メルボルン近郊のベルグレーブの渡辺／加藤宅に蔵書を集中管理し、文庫の集まりも毎月行うようになりました。
以来メルボルンこども文庫は、日本語で書かれた絵本を読んだり、物語を語ったり、人形劇や時節の活動をしながらオーストラリアで暮らす子どもたちに日本語の物語や文字文化に親しんでもらうために活動してきました。文庫活動の目的には日本語や日本文化の維持もありますが、それ以上に、物語に親しみ、創造性や、自然の中で元気に生きる力をつけ、読書好きの子どもを育てることが大切と考えています。
The Melbourne Children's Library began in July 2001. It started when four volunteer families came together with the idea of borrowing and lending high-quality Japanese children’s books to one another. Over time, the number of members and the collection of books grew, and the library’s collection was centrally managed at the Watanabe/Kato residence in Belgrave, a suburb of Melbourne. Monthly gatherings also became a regular feature.
Since then, the Melbourne Children's Library has been dedicated to fostering a love of Japanese stories and written culture among children living in Australia. Activities have included reading Japanese picture books, storytelling, puppet shows, and seasonal events. While one of the library’s objectives is to preserve Japanese language and culture, its broader mission is to cultivate a love for stories, encourage creativity, develop resilience and vitality through experiences in nature, and nurture a passion for reading in children.
お父さんやお母さんの使う言葉で語られた物語は、子どもたちの心に染みこんで、将来は子どもたちの心の故郷になるでしょう。そんな故郷は、世界中どこにいても、いつでも訪れることができます。古来物語は、親から子、祖父母から孫へと伝えられてきました。物語の周りには常に人の輪がありました。メルボルンこども文庫も、そうした物語の周りの小さな人の輪、コミュニティーです。子どもたちがこの輪の中でたくさんの友達を作り、物語を共有し、楽しい子ども時代をおくることが、メルボルンこども文庫の一番の目的です。
メルボルンこども文庫は、ICBA国際児童文庫協会のメンバーです。ICBAを通して、オーストラリアの他の文庫、日本や諸外国の文庫とも交流をもっています。またICBAを通して、伊藤忠記念財団の文庫助成の交付も受けました（2003年度、2008年度、2022年度）。
Stories told in the words of parents become deeply embedded in children’s hearts and, in the future, will serve as a spiritual home for them. Such a home can be visited anytime, no matter where they are in the world. Throughout history, stories have been passed down from parents to children, from grandparents to grandchildren, always surrounded by a circle of people. The Melbourne Children’s Library is one such small community—a circle of people gathered around stories. The library’s primary goal is for children to make many friends within this circle, share stories, and enjoy a joyful childhood.
The Melbourne Children’s Library is a member of ICBA (International Children's Bunko Association). Through ICBA, it connects with other libraries in Australia, Japan, and various other countries. The library has also received support from the Itochu Foundation for Library Assistance (in 2003, 2008, and 2022) through ICBA

活 動
ACTIVITIES
時 間： 毎月第一日曜日午後2時から4時頃まで
本拠地： ダンデノン山、ベルグレーブの渡辺宅。近隣の森林公園、会員宅などで集まりを行うこともある。
定 員： 渡辺宅で行う場合は、先着35名程度まで（約12家族） 参加は要予約。

Time: First Sunday of every month, from 2:00 PM to around 4:00 PM.
Main Location: The Watanabe residence in Belgrave, Dandenong Ranges. Gatherings may also be held at nearby forest parks or at the homes of members.
Capacity: When held at the Watanabe residence, approximately 35 participants (about 12 families) on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are required to participate.

文庫キャンプ
BUNKO CAMP
年一回イースター休暇中頃（3月末か4月上旬）に2泊3日で行っています。
場所はメルボルン近郊の国立公園内キャンプ場などです。
Held once a year during the Easter holiday (late March or early April), the camp lasts for 2 nights and 3 days.
The location is typically a campsite within a national park near Melbourne.
